The small, picturesque island of Mauritius shares a familiar history with many of the Caribbean islands, despite being situated halfway around the world. The island was first discovered by the Arabs, later mapped by the Portuguese, and subsequently colonised by the Dutch, followed by the French, who eventually surrendered control to the British during the Napoleonic Wars.

History shows that European navies and armies were rather fond of their drink, carrying production knowledge with them wherever they travelled. In Mauritius, sugar was plentiful, and where there is sugar and a naval presence, rum soon follows. Early rum distilling practices sometimes allowed undesirable volatile compounds to remain in the spirit, which were both unpleasant in flavour and potentially harmful. These characteristics were often disguised by adding local spices and flavourings. Although modern distillation techniques have largely eliminated the need for such masking, spiced rum remains popular as a stylistic alternative to traditional rum.
