Glendalough 7 Year Old Mizunara Cask Finish Single Malt Whiskey 700ml
Glendalough Distillery places great importance on the wood used to mature its whiskey, recognising that countless subtle factors influence flavour development, from the straightness of the tree and the fineness of the grain to the barrel size and depth of the char. Their whiskeys are initially matured in American white oak bourbon barrels, which form the flavour foundation that has become central to their Irish whiskey style. Each expression is then finished in a second, distinctly different cask.
The Double Barrel whiskey is finished in Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, the 7 year old single malt is finished in Dublin porter barrels, and the 13 year old single malt is refined using legendary Mizunara oak. The distillery is also proud to contribute to the revival of Irish oak in whiskey maturation, supporting the management and regeneration of ancient broadleaf forests.
The search for exceptional oak led the distillery from the wooded mountains of Wicklow to the volcanic northern region of Hokkaido, where Mizunara oak, one of the most highly prized woods in whiskey production, was discovered. The resulting whiskey is vivid yet delicate, displaying elegant depth alongside a vibrant fruity and floral nose.
It delivers a luxuriously smooth mouthfeel with notes of dark chocolate orange, sandalwood and cinnamon, characteristics commonly associated with Mizunara matured whiskies. The 7 year old Mizunara single malt finishes with an exceptionally long echo of toasted oak and oriental spices, with dark chocolate lingering gently to create a truly remarkable whiskey experience.
