Tucked away in the tropical woodlands of Portuguese Goa was a village famed for its rum, a rum that, according to legend, formed part of the greatest treasure in history. Segredo Aldeia is a reinterpretation of this famous rum, recreated close to the place where its story first began.

Distilled by seafaring craftsmen who understood rum as well as they understood the waves, this was a village hidden in secrecy.

In April 1721, Levasseur had just seized the largest treasure in recorded history. Off the coast of Réunion, the French pirate captured the Nossa Senhora do Cabo, the Bishop of Goa’s vessel. The treasure aboard, valued at over a billion dollars, included jewels, gold and religious artefacts from the Se Cathedral in Goa, among them the Flaming Cross of Goa, crafted from solid gold and decorated with diamond, ruby and emerald inlays. The cross was so substantial that it required three men to lift it. Alongside these treasures were barrels of rum, distilled in a village known to only a few, its name known to none.

A few miles upstream along the banks of the Mandovi River lay this secret settlement, called Segredo Aldeia, or ‘secret village’. It was once a refuge for those with troubled pasts, where residents spent their days crafting rum and their nights celebrating it.

Inspired by Goa’s rich and diverse heritage, Segredo Aldeia is the rebirth of a rum once considered a treasure in its own right.
