For many decades, serious whiskey drinkers tended to consume Irish blended whiskey mixed with cola or added to coffee. However, the perception of Irish whiskey is changing. According to John Hansell, editor and publisher of Malt Advocate, the distinction between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky has become increasingly blurred as distillers such as Bushmills Distillery and Jameson Irish Whiskey have broadened their ranges to include premium expressions, from aged blends to pure pot still whiskies and their own single malt releases.

Hansell notes that the finest Irish whiskies are now comparable in quality and complexity to many single malt Scotch whiskies, although greater awareness is still needed regarding the depth and sophistication that modern Irish whiskey can offer.

A good example is Redbreast Irish Whiskey from Irish Distillers Ltd, a single, unblended pure pot still whiskey made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled for smoothness and character.
