Nicaragua is an often overlooked producer of medium bodied rums distilled using column stills, a style that lends itself particularly well to ageing. Thanks to the exceptional quality maintained by distillers such as Flor de Caña, the country’s rums have gained growing international recognition in recent years. The brand is owned and produced by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, which was established in 1890. Although the rum was not commercially marketed until 1937, it is now regarded as one of Latin America’s most prestigious rum brands, having secured 72 awards, medals and commendations over the past five years.
