During the 1970s and 1980s, Michter's Original Sour Mash was the distillery’s most popular product. The term “sour mash” originates from the whiskey production process, where a portion of previously fermented mash is used as a starter for the next fermentation, similar to the technique used in sourdough bread.
Michter’s Sour Mash gained recognition for its distinctive flavour and carefully selected grain composition. It does not fit neatly into either the rye or bourbon category, making it a uniquely characterful expression.
Under the Liquor Licensing Act 1990 it is an offence: For liquor to be delivered to a person under the age of 18 years. Penalty: fine not exceeding 20 penalty units. For a person under the age of 18 years to purchase liquor. Penalty: fine not exceeding 10 penalty units
